Because of the weather The Frozen Series had to be pushed back a couple of weeks to Saturday 17th March and even though everyone that turned up for what was expected to be another well run event by Julian didn't get to sail I think all thought the Curry evening was well worth it and so the New Date Format will stay the same with a Curry after hopefully this time some fun racing.

The Tractor is not to be driven by any Club Member before they have read and signed for (implicitly understanding) the ESSC Tractor operating Procedures.

Ray Clark has kindly offered his time to provide some low key race training on Thursday afternoons in March. The course will be aimed at the sailors who would like to start racing or who are not sure of the rules and would like to gain confidence in different sailing scenarios.  He is hoping to video different race situations on the water which the group can analysed back in the club house. If you are interested please sign up on the board.

There has been some confusion lately over how to check the oil levels on the AVON, and Ribcraft, engines as part of the ‘first parade’ checks.

The oil level check MUST be done when the engine is COLD and in the DOWN position (it’s ‘PARKED’ position whilst in the shed BEFORE moving).

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the engine be started, even for a few seconds, before the oil check is DONE.  This will give a false reading and if oil is then added it may/will cause damage to the engine seals.

An Instruction/Notice has been added to the Powerboat shed Notice Boards and inside the engine covers that NO OIL IS TO BE ADDED if the level is incorrect and that the Bosun, or a Committee member should be informed.
Generally the engine is okay to use if the oil level is a centimetre above or below the correct level (3 on the diagram) on the dipstick. If the oil level is outside of this limit the boat should not be used. The –10 mark at the top end of the dipstick is a Yamaha Drawing reference  and is not to be used as relevant to the oil level.

Your co-operation in this matter would be appreciated.

The Club Regatta is scored using the Personal Handicap System which was set up to encourage the less experienced sailors to race and hopefully give a yardstick
of improvement over time. By design the system favourises the less experienced helmsmen and usually the club regatta podium reflects this situation. This year the sun shone and winds were light and shifty. These conditions allowed the more experienced sailors to show their skill and to overcome the relative handicap of the handicap system. Even so there was still plenty of competition and uncertainty with a battle between Keith McQuillin with a super light weight crew in a Laser 2000, Rick Pharoah with a big Rooster 8.1 rig on a Laser and Julian Astie in a Solo with a fully battened mainsail well adapted to the light conditions.

PowerBoat Update

02/11/2011

You will have noticed that the RibCraft has been out of action for some considerable time after loads of very expensive work and some fault finding by Tony we can safely say it is in good working order again and is back and available for use – may we ask that all issues however small are noted and passed on to the PB bosun to enable the required work to take
place.

Due to a sharp increase in expenditure on repairs and maintenance of the Club’s Tractor please note that with immediate effect the Tractor should only be used to launch and recover Club Powerboats.

Members are no longer to use the Tractor for launching or recovering their personal powerboats. This applies at
all times, including Wednesday and Saturday sailing days, and whether the Tractor is in or out of the Power Boat shed at the time.

Your co-operation in this matter is requested.

Please note that we have been asked by Dhekelia if any club boats are available for their members to charter and we would like to see confirmation of ESSC members requirements at the earliest opportunity.

The ribcraft needs some new engine parts some of which require delivering to Cyprus - taking  at least a week to deliver.   Consequently, the boat will be unavailable for the immediate
future.
