ESSC is again hoping to take the opportunity to watch the Happy Valley Fireworks Display from the sea, the plan being to meet up at the club and to move by sea to sit off the Lemmings beach within the safe area and watch the Fireworks before returning to the club for Sausages, Chips and beans and a glass or two to finish off the evening...

On Sunday 14th August the clubs family sailing Sunday took on a slight differents as it was billed as a family fun day of games and sailing followed by a scrumptious barbecue – did people have fun, I think all that took part would say a very loud “YES” – did you miss a fun day, only you know the answer to that.

We started by signing up into two teams “Chris’s Conquerors” and “Rob’s Rioters” before preparing for battle.  The games were aimed to test both seamanship and sailing skills and I think everyone there would agree some skills were demonstrated better than others.

The competition began with a race to rig the Picos which produced some interesting knots and quick rigging!

The first real game on the water was the “Beer Race”; much too some competitor’s disappointment the beer was actually red coloured water. The pretend beer had to be transported in the boats around a buoy and back into the mole with the least amount of spillages. Emily Whitehorn showed a very steady hand by returning with an almost full glass with some of the credit also going to her dad’s skilful sailing.

Next everyone headed out to sea to test their true sailing skills. The younger members showed some excellent sailing in the relay race and showed the experienced sailors they couldn’t be too complacent as they performed some outstanding manoeuvres; one was a mixture of a gybe and a hand brake turn to come alongside the change over boat.

The more experienced members stepped up to show us all their skills in the sailing backwards race where Rob Featherstone left everyone standing (literally); we were all truly amazed!!

To conclude the sailing races we had an entertaining capsize race which ranged form the text book version to the very, very unusual one; maybe envisaging a whale breaching would help you picture the sight!

After some deserving refreshments the teams went back onto the water for the final battle of paddling races in and around the mole. Here the true competitors appeared with some interesting pulls and pushes to put the opposition’s boats off course. The battles were concluded with the “Bottle game” where the aim was to collect as many bottles from the mole as possible. This was a very crucial event as the scores being extremely close at this point.

The final winners were Chris’s Conquerors by only one point, so well done the Conquerors and good battling the Rioters, maybe next time things will be different because I think it is something we will be asked for again!

The afternoon was packed and busy but at the end we all sat down to a tasty barbecue prepared by Chaz and Helen of ribs, chicken, sausages, burgers and salads, YUMMY.  It really hit the spot and thank you to the extra chefs that volunteered to help Chaz do the cooking.

Thank you to everyone one who participated and helped to make it a super fun day on the water – the question is do we want it again – to which I think the answer it a big “YES”.

Sunday 31st July 

A day for the kiddies of all ages to allow them to let off a little steam and water (water pistols of all sizes are to be used!!) both on and off the water - in a day of battles and skulduggery on the high seas...

This excellent family event is open to members and non-members and if last year’s is anything to go by both kids and adults will have a fantastic time, we will need to know you are coming because we are supplying sausage, beans and chips at the end of the day - so please come down to the club and sign up to a great day...

An evening to remember with the sound and taste of Mexico...

Dress is casual but if you have the stuff then feel free to look the part!!

A big breakfast in aid of the Open Arms Charity, will take place Sun 22 May 11. 

Every year ESSC puts on a special BBB (Big Boys Breakfast) in aid of the Open arms Charity and the "Main Man" Gerry will again be cooking up the delights for you - so come along and enjoy a day on the beach whilst supporting Open Arms.
